I’ve been changing my mobile phone every so often during the past 9 years. I was in my freshman year in college when mobile phone first emerged and it really caught my attention. To have that piece of technology at the palm of your hand, I was really so hyped. My very first mobile phone was a Nokia 3210. It was such an eye-turner during its days. Imagine a phone with no antenna?! And a unique (well during its era) changeable face plates aka casings! I remember buying my first sim card, which costs more than 10x the price of sim cards today. I had my mobile all pimped up during its first month!
After my Nokia 3210, I had a Nokia 3310. I am not really sure on why I had that unit. For me it’s an uglier version of the 3210 but it had more games on it. So I guess, being an impulsive as I was before. I joined the 3310 bandwagon. Then I went to 6210, 7110, and Phillips Xenium (can’t remember the exact model), 6610, and 7650, 3650 (yeah, I know the round keypads, what was I thinking??), a slew of Palm Treos, XDAs and Blackberries. I can no longer recall how many mobile phone models I had for the past 9 years to tell you honestly. That’s how bad I was with changing my mobile. It get me to a point that I would have a phone for only 2 weeks! I got easily bored and would find a new phone to tinker.
From the number of mobile phones that I had, you would imagine where I get my updates on the latest gadgets, right? Yes. I have a ton-worth collection of magazines as well. So just imagine my anticipation whenever my monthly magazine would release their latest editions! Through the years though, I got tired of it and of course all the money I spent on buying those handsets were serious dough. I had to save like crazy and had to lie on some occasions (yes I know kids out there) to my parent just so I can save up.
To date, I have mellowed down and would save on more sensible purchases, especially on mobiles. I actually have an old-school QWERTY phone right now from Samsung, an i600. I had the same unit some 2 years ago and enjoyed it actually. It was my usual impulse to change phones that made me let go of my first i600. Now I am back to this unit and I am happy, and I have no plans of changing anytime soon. As long as I can take notes, view attachments, do email, and of course wifi. I am happy.
I am also in to other gadgets now especially cameras, the big ones of course; I am also into Apple (Notebooks and IPods) and a whole lot of softwares. I really need to be smarter on purchases. With all the innovations and upgrades that have been happening, it’s not really smart to splurge on the latest gadgets. We have to be more realistic on what we really need, against having it for the sake of having the latest.
